– Why Treat Varicose Veins? –

You’ll now almost certainly struggle to have your varicose veins treated on the NHS, as treatment is becoming increasingly rationed. This is because this condition is seen by policy makers as “cosmetic” and therefore not suitable for NHS funding.

Many people are embarrassed by their varicose veins, and this can have a real impact on their lifestyle. They feel that their legs look unattractive or ugly, and are reluctant to wear skirts or dresses, or to take part in summer activities or sport, as they do not wish to wear shorts. The condition can affect body confidence in relationships, and some people are not happy to allow their partner to see their legs. Avoiding complications

There is an increased risk of bleeding from swollen, thinned varicose veins if the leg is subjected to even minor trauma. Not all people with varicose veins will develop this, but some do. The skin around the ankles and feet darkens and becomes thin. This skin may then ulcerate. NICE Guidance

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence NICE) published its guidelines for the management of varicose veins in 2013.

Vascular Clinic

Anyone with symptomatic varicose veins should be seen in a vascular clinic.

Ultrasound Scan

A colour duplex ultrasound scan should be carried out.

Treatment

Treatment should be by thermal ablation (we use radiofrequency) or foam sclerotherapy.

In almost every case, one of these 2 methods is suitable. It is only in very rare circumstances that surgery in hospital under a general anaesthetic is required.
