How No-scalpel Vasectomy Works

A vasectomy works by blocking the vas deferens (the tubes that carry sperm). Sperm can no longer enter the semen, so pregnancy cannot occur. The procedure does not remove the testicles and does not affect testosterone production.

With the no-scalpel approach, the clinician numbs the area and makes a small puncture opening in the skin to reach the tubes, rather than using a scalpel cut. The tubes are then sealed/closed, and the tiny opening usually heals without stitches.

Your Procedure
(Local Anaesthetic)

Vasectomy is performed under local anaesthetic. You may feel a brief sting from the injections, then pressure/tugging sensations rather than pain.

Semen Testing
(“all-clear“)

You are not sterile immediately after the procedure. You must use contraception until you’ve received the all-clear from semen testing after at least 12 weeks (and typically after around 20 ejaculations) to clear remaining sperm.

Frequently Asked Questions

We aim to answer all your questions before your treatment. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us or book a consultation to discuss your personalised treatment.

Is a vasectomy permanent?

Yes—vasectomy should be considered permanent/irreversible, even though reversal can sometimes be attempted privately. If there’s any doubt, it’s better to pause and discuss other options.

How effective is it?

Vasectomy is one of the most effective methods of contraception. A small risk of late failure remains (where the tubes rejoin), quoted as around 1 in 2,000 men.

Will I be sterile straight away?

No. You must continue contraception until semen testing confirms you’re clear—typically 16 weeks and ~20 ejaculations are needed before the test.

Does a vasectomy affect sex drive, erections or orgasm?

A vasectomy blocks sperm from entering semen; it does not remove the testicles or stop testosterone production. Most men notice no change in libido, erections, orgasm or sensation once recovered. (Semen volume usually looks the same because sperm make up a small fraction.)

What are the risks?

Short-term effects like bruising and swelling are common. A small number of men experience chronic testicular pain severe enough to affect day-to-day activities (quoted around 1–2%). As with any procedure, infection or bleeding can occur.

Is the no-scalpel technique “better”?

It’s widely used because the tiny puncture opening usually means less bleeding, no stitches, and may be less painful with fewer complications compared with conventional incision approaches.

How soon can I return to work/exercise?

Many men return to desk work quickly, but heavier activity and strenuous exercise should be avoided initially. Dr Fourie will advise based on your job, comfort and recovery.
