How CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing Works

A CO2 laser energy is emitted and absorbed by the water within the skin. The heat energy causes trauma to the surrounding tissue, damaging the existing collagen structure. The body’s immune system then detects these damaged collagen cells and stimulates fibroblast activity which results in the production and growth of new collagen.

CO2 Laser Resurfacing can be used to improve a wide array of skin conditions, including acne scarring, pigmentation and age spots as well as improving the general overall condition of the skin, improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles whilst creating lift and restoring some elasticity.

A consultation with our medical director Dr Grant McKeating or one of our highly experienced aestheticians is required prior to a CO2 laser treatment, to ensure that it is is both medically and physically appropriate for you, and that it is the most suitable treatment to improve the condition of your skin.

Around 30 minutes before a CO2 laser resurfacing treatment a topical numbing cream is applied to your skin in the treatment area to ensure that you feel as comfortable as possible, so it’s important to factor the numbing time into the total amount of time that you’ll be with us for your appointment on the day.

A single CO2 laser treatment will help to stimulate the natural collagen and elastin production within the skin, but it’s important to know that noticeable results and an actual visible change to the appearance of the skin requires more than one treatment session, and with this in mind we offer discounted treatment packages to help to make your skin transformation journey more affordable.

Frequently Asked Questions on CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing:

We aim to answer all your questions before your treatment.  If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us or book a consultation to discuss your personalised treatment.
What will I experience during the treatment?
A topical anaesthetic cream is applied to the treatment area 30 minutes prior to your CO2 laser treatment to ensure the session is as comfortable as possible. The laser is then passed over the skin in a methodical pattern ensuring even coverage, to achieve skin resurfacing. Immediately after the treatment has been completed an SPF is applied to provide ultimate protection, and you should continue to apply this daily at home as part of your normal skincare routine.
How long does the procedure take?
Depending on the area size being treated, the treatment can take between 30 minutes and 1 hour. A topical anaesthetic cream will be applied 30 minutes prior to the procedure for added comfort.
Is there any downtime?
Immediately after the treatment the skin will appear red and can feel tight and warm. Full recovery time can take up to 4 weeks, including 2 weeks of recovery and 2 weeks of repair. It is very important to wear an SPF every single day throughout your treatment sessions and that this is then continued daily.
How many sessions are required?
A consultation with one of our aestheticians is required prior to a treatment booking, and your skin will be assessed before they are then able to advise as to how many sessions will be required for your desired results.  Treatment sessions may be dependent on results from each treatment. Each treatment will be performed with a minimum gap of 4 weeks between. The skin can take up to 2 – 4 weeks to heal. On average, treatment for skin resurfacing, wrinkle removal and acne scarring require 3-5 sessions and scar removal requires an average of 4-6 sessions.
When will I see results?
Results can take up to 6 weeks to appear, however it is essential to have the full recommended number of sessions as advised during your consultation for optimum results.
