In a nutshell, VenaSeal is glue – for veins!
Old school methods for treating varicose veins would involve surgical ‘stripping’ (removal) of the veins under a general anaesthetic, a short hospital stay and several weeks of downtime at home thereafter.
Technologies and treatments have naturally changed and evolved over time, for example – we’re able to perform an array of varicose vein treatments in our CQC registered clinic in clinic as walk-in walk-out procedures, all without a general anaesthetic and all with minimal downtime!
But VenaSeal is revolutionary. The conception of this clever treatment occurred exactly as you’d image it would – one day a vascular doctor in America was talking to a colleague and posed the question “why couldn’t we treat veins with glue?” And his colleagues response was “I don’t know, why not?” Then began a lengthy process of product development and testing before VenaSeal was approved for use in Europe in 2011, and the USA in 2015, which came later as the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) required a higher level of testing – all of which is great for non-U.S. residents too!
Approval from the FDA means that a product has been rigorously tested and is deemed to be medically safe, and WORK!
The uptake of VenaSeal treatments has risen rapidly over the past few years, however this treatment isn’t currently available on the NHS owing to lower cost alternatives, and it’s also not usually available with private medical insurance providers for the same reason.
But in comparison to radiofrequency ablation (which we also offer at the clinic), VenaSeal doesn’t use heat energy, so the procedure can be performed with just one local anaesthetic injection (per leg), which is great if you’re a tad needle-phobic, and you won’t need to worry about wearing surgical compression stockings afterwards – these aren’t required with VenaSeal, but you will have an elastoplast plaster covering the incision site immediately after treatment, which can be removed once ready.
